Discover the history, architecture, and charm of Takamatsu Castle, the jewel of the city of Shikoku.
Takamatsu Castle Park is open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (in winter, until 4:30 p.m.). It is just a one-minute walk from Takamatsu Station, making it very easy to reach. You can find more details in the official guide: Takamatsu Castle Park
Admission to Takamatsu Castle Park costs 200 yen for adults. Children and students receive reduced rates, and group discounts may also be available. I recommend checking the official Kagawa tourism website for any updates: Official Kagawa Tourism Website.
To fully enjoy Takamatsu Castle Park and its main attractions, such as the garden and the castle remains, I would recommend setting aside between 1.5 and 2 hours. If you enjoy taking photos and strolling at a leisurely pace, perhaps a little longer.
Takamatsu Castle is especially notable for being one of the few seaside castles in Japan, with its moat filled directly with seawater. It was a key stronghold of the Ikoma family and later the Matsudaira clan, playing a strategic role in the history of the Shikoku region. Discover more at: The Ten Most Beautiful Castles in Japan.
Spring (March-April), with the cherry blossoms in bloom, and autumn (October-November), with the colorful foliage, are spectacular times to visit. Early morning is ideal for avoiding crowds and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere of the site. The morning sun also provides excellent light for photography.
The park has paved paths, and most of the grounds are relatively flat, making wheelchair access easier. However, some areas or the tower ruins may have stairs or limited access. I suggest contacting the park administration directly for more detailed information if you have specific needs. The Kagawa Prefecture phone number is +81 87-832-3333.
Very close to the castle, you can visit the famous Ritsurin Garden, considered one of the most beautiful Japanese gardens. Naoshima Island, famous for its contemporary art museums, is also a popular excursion from this area. Takamatsu Market is another lively option for exploring local culture.
I recommend wearing comfortable shoes for walking around the park. Don’t forget your camera to capture the beautiful scenery and architecture. Consider downloading an audio guide app to enrich your visit with historical facts and curiosities, making it even more memorable.
