The northernmost point of Ishigaki Island, where natural beauty blends with maritime history and local culture.
Cape Hirakubo is open 24 hours a day, as it is a lighthouse and natural landmark within a public park. It can be reached by road by car or taxi from central Ishigaki in about 50 minutes. It is advisable to check weather conditions before going, as access may be restricted due to strong winds or heavy rain.
Access to the lighthouse and park is completely free. There are no admission fees to enjoy the views and natural surroundings. However, if you use a rental vehicle, you should consider fuel and parking costs in the area.
A full visit to Cape Hirakubo usually lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. This includes the walk along the pathways to the lighthouse viewpoint and time for photos of the coastal scenery. If you enjoy walking or simply gazing at the sea, you may want to stay a little longer.
Cape Hirakubo is the northernmost point of Ishigaki and is home to the island’s oldest lighthouse, built in 1971, which serves as a symbol of navigation for the region. In addition, its 60-meter cliff is a remarkable example of coral geology and provides a unique habitat for local flora and fauna. It is an ideal place to appreciate Okinawa’s unspoiled nature.
The best time of day is at sunset, when the sun sinks into the East China Sea and creates a stunning display of colors. As for the best time of year, spring and autumn offer milder temperatures and less rainfall. Avoid days with typhoons or strong winds, which may close access.
Unfortunately, access is limited for people with reduced mobility. The walkways to the lighthouse viewpoint have numerous steps and uneven sections, so they are not recommended for wheelchairs or strollers without assistance. We suggest checking with the Ishigaki tourist office for more accessible alternatives in the area.
Near Cape Hirakubo you can visit the famous Kabira Bay, about 25 minutes away by car, where you can go snorkeling or take a glass-bottom boat ride. You can also visit the Yaeyama Museum of Art, about 30 minutes away, with local exhibitions. If you love nature, do not miss Ishigaki Nature Park, about 40 minutes to the south.
Wear comfortable shoes and bring warm clothing, as the wind on the cliff can be strong and cool, even in summer. Do not forget your camera, water, and sunscreen, as there is little natural shade. For a fuller experience, I recommend booking an Ishigaki audio guide to learn more about the site’s history and nature while you enjoy the views.
