¿Sabías que un barco de lujo aquí esquivó doce torpedos en la guerra? Descubre los secretos de este rincón de Yokohama que late con historias de supervivencia.
Yamashita Park is open 24 hours a day, every day, so you can go whenever you like. It’s very easy to reach; I recommend taking the train. The nearest station is Motomachi-Chukagai on the Minatomirai Line, or you can also get off at Ishikawacho Station on the JR Negishi Line and enjoy a short walk. It’s very well signposted!
Good news! Yamashita Park is completely free. You can stroll, relax, and enjoy the views without spending a single yen. Just keep in mind that specific attractions within the park, such as the iconic Hikawa Maru, have their own admission fee.
To enjoy Yamashita Park at a relaxed pace, I suggest setting aside between 1 and 2 hours. That gives you enough time to walk through the gardens, admire the Hikawa Maru, enjoy the sea views, and perhaps stop at one of the nearby cafés. If you also want to visit the ship or the pier, of course, allow extra time.
Yamashita Park is incredibly important to Yokohama. It was Japan’s first waterfront park, built on the rubble left behind after the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, which makes it a symbol of the city’s resilience and reconstruction. It is also home to the Hikawa Maru, a former ocean liner that now serves as a floating museum full of stories.
Any time is good, but if you want the best experience, I recommend visiting in spring (March to May), when the flowers are in full bloom, or in autumn (September to November) for the pleasant weather. To avoid crowds and enjoy beautiful light, try going early in the morning or at sunset; the bay views are spectacular.
Yes, Yamashita Park is designed to be highly accessible. It has wide, flat paths throughout the park, making it ideal for wheelchairs, strollers, and visitors with reduced mobility. You’ll also find accessible restrooms. You shouldn’t have any trouble enjoying the whole promenade!
Plenty! You’re in a fantastic area. Right next door you have Yokohama Chinatown, which is wonderful for food and exploring. You can also visit the Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse for shopping and dining, or take a walk through the futuristic Minato Mirai 21. There’s something for every taste within a short walk or ride!
Absolutely! First, wear comfortable shoes for walking. Second, if you can, visit the inside of the Hikawa Maru too; it’s a historical gem. Third, don’t forget your camera to capture the harbor views and the statue of the Girl with Red Shoes. Finally, there are plenty of places nearby to eat, from street stalls to restaurants with views, so plan for lunch or dinner in the area. Enjoy!
