El volcán sagrado de Nikko donde peregrinos descalzos subían en la oscuridad para purificarse... ¿y si te cuento por qué sigue prohibido para muchos?
Mount Nantai is a mountain, so it does not have opening or closing hours like a building. Climbing is mainly done during the hiking season. The most common way to get there is from Nikko, using the Akechidaira Ropeway for a panoramic view, or directly by bus from Nikko Station to Chuzenji Onsen, which is the starting point for many hiking routes. You can check ropeway and bus schedules on the Tobu Bus website: Tobu Bus Official Website.
Climbing Mount Nantai itself is free, as it is a natural area. However, if you use the Akechidaira Ropeway to enjoy the views, there is a fare. We recommend checking prices and schedules on its official page or at the Nikko tourist office: Nikko Official Tourist Association.
If you plan to hike to the summit of Mount Nantai, the full route (round trip from Futarasan Shrine Chugushi) can take between 6 and 8 hours, depending on your fitness level. If you only want to enjoy the views from the ropeway or the areas around Lake Chuzenji, 2 to 3 hours will be enough to explore the area and take photos.
Mount Nantai, whose name means 'Male Body Mountain,' is an inactive volcano and a sacred mountain. It is worshipped as a deity at Futarasan Shrine, whose main site is in Nikko and which has a secondary shrine at the foot of the mountain near Lake Chuzenji. It has been a place of pilgrimage for centuries and is considered a home of the Shinto gods.
The best time to climb Mount Nantai is during autumn (late September to early November) for the stunning foliage colors, or in spring (May to June) when the weather is pleasant. During winter, the mountain may be covered in snow and some routes may be inaccessible or require specialized equipment. The Akechidaira Ropeway offers spectacular views during the autumn season.
The summit of Mount Nantai is not accessible for people with reduced mobility, as the ascent is on foot via mountain trails. However, the areas around Lake Chuzenji and the Akechidaira Ropeway offer more accessible viewpoints and walkways to enjoy views of the mountain and surrounding landscape. It is recommended to check the ropeway's specific accessibility if you plan to use it.
Near Mount Nantai, you will find beautiful Lake Chuzenji, ideal for boat rides or relaxing on its shores. There is also the impressive Kegon Falls, one of Japan’s three most famous waterfalls, and Futarasan Shrine Chugushi at the foot of the mountain. In addition, the city of Nikko itself, with its famous shrines and temples that are UNESCO World Heritage Sites, is a short distance away.
If you are going hiking, make sure to bring suitable footwear, enough water, and some food. Check the weather forecast before you go and dress in layers, as temperatures can change. If you are only looking for views, the Akechidaira Ropeway is an excellent option. Consider buying a bus pass if you plan to visit several attractions in the area. And don’t forget your camera to capture the spectacular scenery!
