An impressive waterfall in Nikko, Japan, celebrated for its natural beauty and as an essential part of Nikko National Park.
To get there, take a Tobu Bus from JR Nikko Station or Tobu Nikko Station bound for Chuzenji Onsen (about 50 minutes). The elevator to view the waterfall generally operates from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (varies by season); you can check transport schedules on the official Tobu Bus website.
You can see the waterfall free of charge from the upper observation platform. However, for the best experience, we recommend paying for the elevator down to the base (about JPY 570 for adults / JPY 340 for children), which offers a much more dramatic view.
A standard visit usually lasts between 30 and 45 minutes, enough time to go down by elevator and take photos. If you plan to explore the nearby lake or eat in the area, we suggest allowing at least an hour and a half.
They are considered one of the Three Great Waterfalls of Japan and were formed when lava flow from Mount Nantai blocked the Daiya River. With a drop of 97 meters, they are an iconic symbol of the natural and geological beauty of Nikko National Park.
The most spectacular time is mid-October to see the autumn colors, or winter when the waterfall freezes and creates a blue-ice landscape. We recommend going early in the morning (before 10:00 a.m.) to avoid tour crowds.
Yes, the facilities are quite accessible; there are ramps in the upper area, and the elevator allows wheelchair access to the lower observation platform. Keep in mind that during peak season, heavy crowds can make movement a bit more difficult.
You are right next to the stunning Lake Chuzenji, perfect for a walk after seeing the waterfall. You can also visit Chuzenji Temple or take the Akechidaira Ropeway for a panoramic view of the area.
Bring an extra layer of clothing even in summer, as the temperature drops noticeably near the water and because of the altitude. Also, do not stay only at the top; paying for the elevator ticket is the only way to truly feel the roar and power of the water.
