Mount Misen is the highest peak on Miyajima Island, a sacred place of remarkable natural beauty.
You can hike up using three main trails or take the Miyajima Ropeway, which generally operates from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Keep in mind that the ropeway station does not take you all the way to the summit; you will need to walk about 30 more minutes to reach the main observation deck.
Access to the mountain on foot is completely free, ideal if you are looking for adventure and savings. If you prefer the ropeway, the price is around 2,000 yen round trip for adults and 1,000 yen for children; you can check updated fares on the official website.
We recommend allowing at least 2 to 3 hours to enjoy the views without rushing, even if you use the ropeway. If you choose to hike from the base, plan on 90 to 120 minutes just for the ascent, depending on your fitness level.
Mount Misen has been sacred since Kobo Daishi founded Shingon Buddhism here in 806. At the summit you will find Reikado Hall, which protects the 'Eternal Flame,' a fire that has been burning for more than 1,200 years and was used to light the Flame of Peace in Hiroshima.
Clear days are essential for appreciating the panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea all the way to Shikoku. Autumn, especially November, is spectacular because of the maple colors, but try to go up early in the morning to avoid crowds and enjoy better visibility.
Unfortunately, accessibility is very limited; although the ropeway covers much of the route, the final path to the summit and observation deck has steep slopes and dirt-and-stone steps. It is not recommended for wheelchair users or people with serious mobility difficulties.
Right at the foot of the mountain is the impressive Daisho-in Temple, filled with statues and unique rituals. And, of course, just a short walk away is the famous Itsukushima Shrine with its iconic floating torii gate on the water.
Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes, as the terrain is uneven, and make sure to bring enough water, since there are few vending machines higher up. Stay alert for the wild monkeys at the summit; do not feed them or leave food bags visible.
