A monumental engineering feat towering over the Japanese Alps, Kurobe Dam is Japan’s tallest arch dam and a modern marvel.
The dam is generally open from mid-April to November 30, remaining closed in winter due to snow. It is not accessible by private car; you must arrive via the famous Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route using the Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus from Ogizawa Station or the cable car from the Tateyama side.
Walking across the dam’s promenade is free, but the cost lies in the Alpine Route transportation needed to get there. Prices vary depending on the route, but a round-trip ticket from Ogizawa costs around JPY 3,200; you can check updated fares on the official Alpine Route website.
To walk around the dam, take photos, and go up to the observation deck, I recommend allowing between 60 and 90 minutes. If you decide to take the sightseeing boat 'Garbe' on Lake Kurobe, you should add about 40 extra minutes to your itinerary.
It is Japan’s tallest dam at 186 meters and an engineering masterpiece completed in 1963 after overcoming extreme hardships. Its construction was so epic and tragic (171 workers died) that it became known as the 'Project of the Century' and symbolizes Japan’s postwar economic recovery.
The main attraction is the sightseeing water discharge, which usually takes place daily from late June to mid-October. If you want the best scenery, visit in October to see the water contrasted against the mountains’ stunning autumn colors.
Most of the access to the dam and the Alpine Route transportation is adapted, and the staff are very helpful with wheelchair assistance. However, keep in mind that the highest observation deck requires climbing more than 200 steps, so that specific area is not accessible.
While traveling the Alpine Route, don’t miss Murodo, the highest point, to see the famous Snow Corridor in spring or the alpine lakes in summer. It is also highly recommended to ride the Tateyama Ropeway, which offers 360-degree panoramic views without support pillars.
Bring layered clothing and comfortable shoes, as mountain weather changes quickly and it can be cold even in summer. And one food tip: don’t leave without trying the famous 'Kurobe Dam Curry' at the rest area restaurant, a fun dish shaped like the dam.
