Be sure to book in advance, as it is very popular. You can find more details on how to reserve on the Myoryuji Temple website (although it is mostly in Japanese, you can use a translator).
General admission to Myoryuji Temple is 1,200 yen per adult. Special discounts or reduced rates for children, students, or seniors are not usually offered. It is important to know that payment is generally made in cash at the ticket counter on the day of the visit.
The guided tour of Myoryuji Temple lasts approximately 40 to 50 minutes. We recommend arriving a little before your reserved time to check in and get ready. You can expect the total experience, including check-in, to last about an hour.
Myoryuji Temple was built in the 17th century as a fortified outpost by the Maeda lords of the Kaga Domain. It is nicknamed the 'Ninja Temple' not because ninjas lived there, but because of its ingenious traps, hidden corridors, and defensive features, such as secret staircases and trap rooms, designed to protect the temple and its lord from possible attacks.
Myoryuji Temple can be visited at any time of year, as much of the experience takes place indoors. We recommend going early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid crowds, especially during peak tourist seasons (spring and autumn). Avoiding weekends can also provide a quieter experience.
Unfortunately, Myoryuji Temple has many steep stairs, narrow corridors, and uneven levels, which makes it very difficult, if not impossible, for wheelchair users or people with reduced mobility. It is not wheelchair accessible. Caution is recommended when walking through its many architectural quirks.
Myoryuji Temple is located in the Nagamachi district, a historic samurai area. Nearby, you can visit the Nagamachi Samurai District, Kenrokuen Garden (one of the three most beautiful gardens in Japan), and Kanazawa Castle. You can also explore the riverside area and its small shops.
Yes, we recommend booking your visit in advance, as spaces are limited and entry without a reservation is not allowed. Arrive about 15 minutes before your scheduled time to check in. Photography is not allowed inside the temple in order to preserve its history and privacy. And get ready to go up and down stairs!
