Donde las aguas termales curan el cuerpo... y alguna rebelión alteró la historia
The retreat is usually open daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, but we recommend checking its official website before visiting. To get there, you can take a bus from Yufuin Station (about 15 minutes) or drive along the scenic route. More details at: Kyushu Tourism Office.
Admission is completely free, although there is a voluntary donation box for the upkeep of the site. Some special activities, such as tea ceremonies, may have an additional cost.
We recommend setting aside between 1 hour and 1 hour 30 minutes to leisurely explore the main grounds, the gardens, and enjoy the spiritual atmosphere. If you plan to meditate or take part in activities, allow extra time.
Yufu is a spiritual retreat that combines Buddhist and Shinto traditions, founded as a place of retreat for samurai during the Edo period. Its traditional Japanese architecture and mountain landscapes make it unique in the Kyushu region.
Spring (March-May) for the cherry blossoms and autumn (October-November) with its reddish colors are magical times. Avoid July-August because of heavy rains. Early mornings are less crowded.
The main area has adapted access, but some garden areas have gravel paths and uneven steps. Contact them in advance at (+81 977-85-2321) to confirm options based on specific needs.
Very close by are the famous Beppu Onsen hot springs (15 km) and Lake Kinrin. About 40 minutes away is Mount Aso with its active crater. More suggestions: Official Kyushu Guide.
Wear comfortable shoes for walking on uneven ground, bring cash for donations or souvenirs, and respect the silence in the meditation areas. Don’t forget your water bottle and your camera to capture the panoramic views!
