¿Sabías que una montaña se partió en dos por un drama divino? Ven, te cuento los secretos que solo los locales conocemos de este rincón volcánico en Yufu.
Yufu Nature Park is open 24 hours a day all year round, as it is an outdoor natural area. You can take the train to Yufuin Station (from Oita or Beppu) and then walk about 20–30 minutes or take a local bus; check routes on the official Yufuin website.
Admission is completely free, with no entrance fees. You will only pay for transportation or parking if you go by car (around 500 yen per day).
It is recommended to spend between 2 and 4 hours exploring the main trails and enjoying the views. If you hike up Mount Yufu, it may take a full day.
The park lies on the slopes of Mount Yufu, an active volcano with a history stretching back thousands of years, linked to the region’s onsen traditions since the Edo period. It is a sacred place for locals and represents the volcanic natural beauty of Oita.
Spring (March–May) for cherry blossoms and autumn (October–November) for red foliage are ideal. Avoid summer midday because of the heat; go early for views with morning mist.
The main trails have paved sections near the entrance, but the routes up Mount Yufu are steep and not recommended for wheelchairs. There are accessible viewing areas; check updates on the Yufu City website.
Nearby you will find Lake Kinrin (10 minutes on foot), famous for its hot springs and reflections, as well as several onsen ryokans. There is also Yufuin Floral Village for a charming stop 15 minutes away.
Bring comfortable hiking shoes, water, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Download the offline map from the official Oita Tourism app and visit early to avoid crowds; book nearby onsen in advance.
