Hokkaido Jingu is open all day, but the main grounds are accessible from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with hours varying by season. No advance reservation is required. You can confirm exact opening times on the official website: Visit official site.
Entry to the shrine grounds is completely free. Only optional activities have a cost, such as buying amulets (omamori) from 500 yen or writing wishes on ema plaques for 500 to 800 yen.
A basic visit takes about 30 minutes, but we recommend 1 hour to explore the gardens at a relaxed pace, take part in rituals such as temizu water purification, and take photographs. If you plan to attend special ceremonies, you will need more time.
It is the most important Shinto shrine in Hokkaido, founded in 1869 to honor Emperor Meiji and three imperial deities. It symbolizes the development of Sapporo and protects the entire island. Its architecture is impressive, having been rebuilt in 1978 after a fire.
It is spectacular in spring, especially in late April during hanami, with 1,500 cherry trees in bloom, and in winter for its snowy scenery from December to January. Avoid Japanese public holidays such as New Year from January 1 to 3 because of heavy crowds.
The main path is accessible, but there are steps at the entrance to the main precinct. There is an alternative step-free route marked with signs. The gardens have gravel paths that may be difficult for wheelchair users.
Five minutes away is Maruyama Park with its famous morning market, open until 2:00 PM, and to the west is Mount Moiwa with a panoramic viewpoint: Mount Moiwa info. There is also a nearby open-air sculpture museum.
Dress in layers, as it can be cold even in summer, wear comfortable shoes, and bring coins for donations from 5 to 100 yen. Respect the rituals: bow before entering the torii, wash your left hand, then your right hand, and rinse your mouth at the temizu fountain. More etiquette information here: Shrine etiquette guide.
