Japan's oldest Buddhist temple, founded by Prince Shotoku in the 6th century.
Shitenno-ji Temple (Shitennoji Temple) generally opens at 8:30 AM and closes around 4:30 PM (hours may vary, so checking the official website is recommended). You can easily get there by subway to Shitennoji-mae Yuhigaoka Station on the Tanimachi Line, or to Tennoji Station on the JR and Midosuji lines.
Access to the main temple grounds is free. However, there is an admission fee to enter the Gokuraku-jodo Garden and the Treasure House, usually around 300 and 500 yen respectively.
For a full and unhurried visit, we recommend allowing between 1.5 and 2 hours. That gives you enough time to explore the grounds, the garden, and the treasure house if you choose to enter.
Shitenno-ji Temple is one of Japan's oldest Buddhist temples, founded in 593 by Prince Shotoku, who helped introduce Buddhism to the country. It represents a cultural and spiritual milestone and is an important example of early Buddhist architecture and art in Japan.
The best time to visit is early in the morning to avoid the crowds, or later in the afternoon. As for the best season, spring (March-April), with the cherry blossoms, and autumn (October-November), with its colorful foliage, offer spectacular scenery.
Most of the temple's paths and main areas are relatively flat and accessible. However, some older structures or certain gardens may have steps. For specific accessibility requirements, it is recommended to contact the temple directly at +81-6-6771-0066.
Very close to Shitenno-ji Temple, you will find Tennoji Zoo, Keitakuen Garden, and the Abeno Harukas skyscraper, which offers spectacular panoramic views of Osaka. The lively Shinsekai shopping and entertainment district is also within easy reach.
We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, especially if you plan to explore the grounds thoroughly. It is also respectful to keep your shoulders and knees covered. There are some souvenir shops and light food stalls nearby, but there are no restaurants inside the temple. And don't forget your camera!
