Where British bricks tell stories of survival, smelly cod and stray bullets
The Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses are usually open from 9:30 AM to 7:00 PM, although hours may vary by venue. It’s best to check the official website to confirm. You can get there easily by tram; get off at Jujigai Station and walk about 5–7 minutes. It’s a very pleasant stroll.
Good news: entry to the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses themselves is completely free. You can walk around, admire the architecture, and enjoy the atmosphere at no cost. However, keep in mind that the shops, restaurants, and museums inside the warehouses have their own prices.
To fully enjoy the warehouses, I’d recommend setting aside at least 2 to 3 hours. That gives you time to explore the different shops, enjoy a coffee or a meal, and stroll around the harbor area. If you love shopping, you could easily spend even more time there.
Good eye. The Red Brick Warehouses, known as the Kanemori Red Brick Warehouses, were originally built in the late 19th century by a local merchant and used as commercial storage facilities. Today, they have been restored and transformed into a lively shopping and tourist complex, while preserving their historic charm and connection to Hakodate’s port past.
To avoid the crowds and enjoy fantastic light for photos, I suggest visiting in mid-morning or in the late afternoon, just before dusk. It’s especially magical during the evening illumination. As for the time of year, spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) offer pleasant weather and fewer tourists than summer.
Yes, in general they are quite accessible. The walkways are wide, and many of the buildings have ramps and elevators to make access easier. It’s a popular place for families, so they are usually well prepared. If you have a specific concern, I suggest contacting the management directly through their contact page.
You’re in a fantastic area. Right nearby is the picturesque Motomachi district, with its historic churches and Western-style houses. You can also take the ropeway up Mount Hakodate for spectacular night views. Breakfast at the Hakodate Morning Market is also a must-do experience within easy reach.
Of course—here are a couple. First, try the famous Hokkaido milk ice cream sold in several shops; it’s delicious. Second, don’t forget to walk along the pier behind the warehouses for great views. And if you’re looking for a unique souvenir, there are plenty of shops selling crafts and local products. Enjoy!
