The park is open daily from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM (last admission at 4:30 PM), except during extreme bad weather. It is easily reached by bus from Beppu Station (about 20 minutes) or by car; take the monkey tram from the base station up the mountain. More details are available on the official website.

The round-trip monkey tram fare is 580 yen for adults, 290 yen for children (ages 4–12), and free for children under 4. There is no additional park admission once you reach the top. Check updated prices on the official website.

A typical visit lasts 1 to 2 hours, including the monkey tram ride and the roughly 500-meter observation trail. If you want to watch the monkeys being fed, allow an extra 30 minutes. It is ideal for a half-day stop.

Founded in 1952 as a natural sanctuary, it protects more than 1,000 Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) in their original habitat on Mount Takasaki. It is a key site for the conservation and study of these monkeys, which have been designated a natural treasure of Japan.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (October to November) are ideal thanks to the mild weather and smaller crowds; avoid the hot summer. Go early in the morning (around 9:00 AM) to see the monkeys being fed and enjoy fewer visitors.

The monkey tram is accessible, but the main trail is steep and includes stairs, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs. There is a flatter lower observation area with partial views. Contact the park at +81-977-66-0230 for special options.

In Beppu, visit the geothermal Hells such as Sea Hell, about 15 minutes away by car, or relax in Beppu’s hot springs. Beppu Station is nearby for further thermal sightseeing. Use Google Maps for routes.
