An iconic enclosed bridge in Venice that connects the Doge's Palace with the New Prison, famous for the stories and legends that surround it.
The Bridge of Sighs can be admired from the outside, from the nearby bridges or by gondola. To cross it and experience the view from inside, you must visit the Doge's Palace. Check the opening hours and buy your tickets online for the Doge's Palace at its official website; they are usually from 9:00 to 18:00 or 19:00 depending on the time of year.
Seeing the Bridge of Sighs from the outside is completely free. However, to cross it from the inside, you must purchase a ticket for the Doge's Palace, as the bridge is part of its tour. Prices vary; we recommend checking them on the Doge's Palace ticket page.
Observing the Bridge of Sighs from the outside takes no more than 10-15 minutes. If you decide to visit it from the inside as part of the Doge's Palace tour, the full visit to the Palace can take you between 1.5 and 2.5 hours, including the passage across the bridge.
The Bridge of Sighs (Ponte dei Sospiri) was built in the 17th century to connect the Doge's Palace with the New Prisons. Its popular name comes from the sighs that prisoners gave when they saw the beauty of Venice for the last time before being imprisoned. It is at once a melancholic and romantic symbol.
To avoid the biggest crowds, I suggest visiting it first thing in the morning (right when the Doge's Palace opens) or at the end of the afternoon. As for the time of year, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer pleasant weather and fewer tourists than summer.
From the outside, the bridge is visible from various accessible points. However, the internal route through the Doge's Palace, which includes the Bridge of Sighs, may have stairs and may not be fully accessible for wheelchairs. It is advisable to contact the Doge's Palace for detailed accessibility information: Contact information.
The Bridge of Sighs is strategically located in the heart of Venice. Right next to it you have the imposing St. Mark's Square, St. Mark's Basilica, the Bell Tower and, of course, the Doge's Palace, to which the bridge belongs. You can also take a gondola ride along the nearby canals.
For the best exterior view, position yourself on the Ponte della Paglia, just east of the Bridge of Sighs, or on a gondola ride. If you visit the Doge's Palace, consider a guided tour to fully understand its history and that of the bridge. Always remember to wear comfortable footwear for walking around Venice and, if you go in high season, book your tickets in advance!
