A journey through history and natural beauty, where art and culture intertwine with breathtaking landscapes.
The Montefeltro Hills are an open natural area accessible year-round, 24 hours a day, although daytime visits are recommended for safety. You can arrive by car via the SS73bis from Urbino (about 10–15 minutes) or by local bus; there is free parking at the main trailheads. Check the official Marche Tourism website for detailed maps.
Visiting the hills is completely free, as this is a natural landscape with public trails and no entrance tolls. You will only pay for parking if you use regulated areas (generally €1–2 per hour) or for transport. If you rent bikes or hire guides, check prices at the Urbino visitor center.
It is recommended to allow 2 to 4 hours for a moderate walk along the main trails and to enjoy the panoramic views. If you plan a full circular route, such as the Natural Park trail, allow half a day. Bring water and comfortable footwear to make the most of your experience.
The Montefeltro Hills were part of the historic Duchy of Montefeltro, ruled by Federico da Montefeltro in the 15th century, a Renaissance patron closely linked to Urbino. Today they form a natural park that preserves medieval landscapes, castles, and biodiversity, highlighted by the UNESCO value of the region’s cultural heritage.
Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–October) are ideal thanks to the mild weather and vibrant colors, while avoiding the summer heat. Go early in the morning for perfect photo light and fewer people; summer sunsets are magical.
Some viewpoints and main paths are wheelchair accessible, but many trails are uneven and steep. I recommend flatter routes such as the Marche Balcony trail; contact +39 0722 2613 (Urbino tourist office) for up-to-date accessibility information.
In Urbino, just 10 km away, visit the Ducal Palace and the Cathedral, both part of a UNESCO World Heritage site. Nearby you will also find Gradara Castle (30 minutes by car) and San Leo with its fortress; plan a combined day of history and nature. More information at Urbino Tourism.
Bring hiking shoes, sunscreen, water, and an offline map (download one from apps such as AllTrails). Try local products such as olive oil at nearby farms and use audio guides for stories; avoid weekends if you are looking for peace and quiet. Combine it with a picnic for an unforgettable experience!
