La fortaleza construida con las lágrimas de los sieneses que hoy baila al ritmo del jazz
Fortezza Medicea is usually open from morning until sunset, but hours may vary seasonally. We recommend always checking the latest information on the official Siena City Council website or on Google Maps before your visit. Access to much of the site is free, making it ideal for a walk or a coffee.
The good news is that general admission to Fortezza Medicea is free. You can walk along its walls and enjoy the views at no cost. However, keep in mind that inside the complex there are bars, restaurants, and occasionally events or exhibitions that may have an associated fee. There is no entrance charge like at a traditional museum.
For a relaxed visit, including a walk along the walls, enjoying the views, and perhaps having a coffee, I recommend setting aside between 1 and 2 hours. If you want to explore more slowly or if there is a special event, that time could be longer. It is a place to enjoy without rushing.
Fortezza Medicea, also known as the Fort of Santa Barbara, was built by the Medici after the fall of the Republic of Siena in the 16th century. Its main purpose was to maintain control over the city. Today, it symbolizes Siena’s complex history and is an excellent example of Renaissance military architecture, offering a unique perspective on the city’s past.
The best time to visit is during spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October), when the weather is milder and the colors are spectacular. If you visit in summer, I recommend going early in the morning or at sunset to avoid the heat and enjoy the best light for your photos. Sunsets from the walls are spectacular.
Much of the fortress is accessible, especially the main paths and the central area. However, since it is an old fortress, some areas may have slopes or uneven surfaces. I suggest contacting the Siena tourist office directly for more detailed information about accessibility for wheelchairs or strollers.
Very close to Fortezza Medicea you will find the beautiful Lizza Gardens, a public park that is perfect for relaxing. You are also just a short walk from Siena’s historic center, where you should not miss Piazza del Campo, Siena Cathedral, and the Torre del Mangia. Siena is easy to explore on foot!
Of course, here are a few: wear comfortable shoes for walking along the walls, and bring a bottle of water, especially in summer. Do not forget your camera, as the panoramic views are incredible. Take your time at the Italian Wine House inside the fortress to try local wines or enjoy a coffee. And keep an eye on the schedule, as there are often cultural events or local markets.
