Piazza del Duomo is a public square and, as such, it is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, allowing you to access it at any time. You can easily reach it on foot from anywhere in the historic center of San Gimignano, as it is the heart of the town.
Piazza del Duomo is a public space and access is completely free. However, if you wish to visit the Duomo (Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta), the Town Hall, or Torre Grossa, which stand around the square, these attractions have their own admission fees. I recommend checking their individual websites for up-to-date pricing information.
You can enjoy Piazza del Duomo in about 30 to 60 minutes if you simply want to soak up the atmosphere and admire its architecture. However, if you plan to visit the Duomo, climb Torre Grossa, or explore the Town Hall, you should allow 2 to 3 hours for a more complete experience.
Piazza del Duomo has been the religious and political center of San Gimignano since the Middle Ages. Here you will find the Collegiate Church, whose interior is famous for its stunning frescoes, and the Town Hall, which housed the city government and from which Torre Grossa rises, the highest point for enjoying panoramic views.
To avoid the crowds and enjoy a quieter experience, I suggest visiting the square early in the morning or late in the afternoon. As for the time of year, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer pleasant weather and fewer crowds than summer.
Piazza del Duomo is a cobbled square, typical of medieval historic centers, which may make wheelchair use somewhat difficult. However, as it is an open space, moving around within the square itself is possible. For access to individual buildings such as the Duomo or Torre Grossa, it is advisable to contact them directly regarding their accessibility facilities.
Immediately next to Piazza del Duomo, you will find the Town Hall with Torre Grossa, the Duomo (Collegiate Church of Santa Maria Assunta), and the Civic Museum. Just a few steps away, you can also visit the Torture Museum or explore other charming squares such as Piazza della Cisterna, famous for its medieval well.
Of course! I recommend wearing comfortable shoes, as the streets are cobbled. Don’t forget your camera; the views are spectacular, especially from Torre Grossa if you decide to climb it. Also, consider stopping at one of the nearby cafés to enjoy a good coffee and watch people coming and going, experiencing the authentic atmosphere of San Gimignano.
