The wineries and cellars in the historic center of Montepulciano usually have seasonal opening hours. Many open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 or 7:00 p.m., although it is advisable to check the specific hours of each cellar you wish to visit. Some offer guided tours with advance booking, while others allow free access to their shops and tasting areas. A good starting point is the Montepulciano tourist office, where you can get a map and up-to-date opening hours.
Access to many cellars to visit the shop or take a brief look is usually free. However, wine tastings, especially those that include a guided explanation or pairings with snacks, have a cost that varies depending on the cellar and the quantity and quality of the wines to be tasted. Tasting prices usually range from €10 to €30 per person. We recommend asking about prices before the tasting. The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Consortium has a list of cellars.
For an enjoyable and unhurried experience, we suggest setting aside at least half a day, around 3 to 4 hours. This will allow you to visit 2 or 3 different cellars, enjoy tastings, explore their historic corners, and immerse yourself in the atmosphere. If you plan to take a deeper tour or enjoy several tastings, you might even consider a full day.
These cellars are not just storage spaces, but living witnesses to the history of Montepulciano. Many are located in Etruscan caves or medieval structures, used for centuries to age the famous Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. Their cool and constant atmosphere, together with a winemaking tradition that dates back to ancient times, gives them immeasurable cultural and historical value, making them an integral part of the town's identity.
Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are ideal times thanks to the pleasant weather and Tuscan landscapes. Autumn is also the grape harvest season, which adds a special charm to the visit. To avoid crowds, I suggest visiting the cellars early in the morning or in mid-afternoon. Weekends are usually busier. For a quieter experience, weekdays are perfect.
Because of their historic and underground nature, many cellars may have steps, uneven floors, or narrow spaces that make access difficult for people with reduced mobility. However, some more modern wineries or adapted spaces offer better accessibility. I recommend contacting the cellars you are interested in directly before your visit to confirm their access facilities. The local tourist office may also have useful information on this.
Montepulciano is full of charm. Do not miss the impressive Piazza Grande with its Cathedral and Town Hall. Explore the Pulcinella Tower or admire the view from the Fortress of Montepulciano. A short distance away, you can also visit the beautiful Temple of San Biagio or enjoy the landscapes of the Val d'Orcia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Of course, here are some tips: 1) Book in advance if you want guided tours or special tastings, especially in high season. 2) Wear comfortable clothing and suitable footwear, as some cellars have uneven floors. 3) If you are going to taste several wines, consider using a spittoon so you do not get drunk. 4) Do not forget to buy a bottle of your favorite Vino Nobile as a souvenir. 5) Ask the experts. They are delighted to share their knowledge about wine.
