The Temple of Heracles, part of the Valley of the Temples Archaeological Park in Agrigento, Sicily, is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in summer (April to October) and from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in winter, although it is recommended to check the official website for possible changes. Admission to the Archaeological Park, which includes the Temple of Heracles, costs 12 euros for adults, with discounts for young people, seniors, and families; children under 12 enter free. Tickets are sold at the ticket office or online to avoid queues. Check updated prices on the official ticket portal.
For a complete visit to the Temple of Heracles and its ruins, along with the context of the valley, at least 1 to 2 hours are recommended, allowing time to walk and read the explanations. If you explore the entire park, plan for half a day. Wear comfortable shoes, as the ground is uneven.
Built in the 5th century BC by the ancient Greeks in Akragas, now Agrigento, the Temple of Heracles is one of the oldest in Sicily, dedicated to the mythological hero, with only eight Doric columns still standing out of the original 38. It represents the grandeur of Magna Graecia and its fusion of mythology and classical architecture. It is a key site for understanding Greek influence in southern Italy.
Spring (April-May) or autumn (September-October) are ideal because of the mild weather and fewer tourists, avoiding the sweltering Sicilian summer heat. Visit early in the morning to enjoy the golden light and avoid crowds, or at sunset for spectacular views. Check the forecast for sunny days that enhance the ruins.
Access to the park is partially accessible, with paved paths and an optional tourist train, but the temple itself has uneven ground and steps, which may be challenging for wheelchairs. Adapted guide services or golf cart loans are recommended; contact the park at +39 0922 497626 for assistance. More info in the accessibility section of the official website.
In the Valley of the Temples, do not miss the nearby Temple of Concordia, perfectly preserved, or the Temple of Zeus just a few minutes away on foot. Outside the park, explore Agrigento's historic center with its cathedral and the Regional Archaeological Museum just 3 km away. Combine it with a visit to San Leone beach for a full day out.
Use an audio guide or app to enrich the historical experience; IAudioguia is recommended for personalized audio tours in English.
