An ancient Greek temple dedicated to Asclepius, the god of medicine, located among the ruins of Agrigento, Sicily.
The Temple of Asclepius is located within the Valley of the Temples Archaeological Park. The park is open every day: from 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM (last entry at 6:00 PM) from October 28 to March 23, and from 8:30 AM to 8:00 PM (last entry at 7:00 PM) from March 24 to October 27. You can arrive by local bus or car, and parking is available. I recommend checking the official website for any schedule updates: Valley of the Temples Archaeological Park.
Admission to the Temple of Asclepius is included with the purchase of a ticket to the Valley of the Temples Archaeological Park. The full ticket price is €13.50. There are discounts for groups and certain categories, and admission is free on the first Sunday of every month. For details on prices and possible combinations, see the official booking page: Buy Valley of the Temples Tickets.
For the Temple of Asclepius itself, a visit of 20–30 minutes is enough to admire it and capture its essence. However, since it is part of the Valley of the Temples, I suggest allowing at least 3–4 hours to enjoy the entire park, including other temples and the museum.
The Temple of Asclepius was dedicated to the Greek god of medicine, Asclepius, and was a place of pilgrimage for the sick seeking healing. Its location, near a spring and outside the city walls, is believed to have been strategic for healing rituals. Although only two columns and the altar remain, its history is fascinating and reflects the importance of medicine in ancient Greece.
To avoid the intense summer heat and the crowds, I recommend visiting in spring (April–May) or autumn (September–October). If you can only go in summer, the early morning hours (right at opening time) or late afternoon are ideal for better light and more pleasant temperatures. The golden light at sunset is simply magical.
The Valley of the Temples has improved its accessibility. Although the terrain is uneven in some areas, there are accessible routes that allow visitors to reach several important points, including the Temple of Asclepius. I suggest contacting the park administration directly (+39 0922 621611) before your visit to get detailed information about specific routes and possible assistance.
There is plenty to see! In the Valley of the Temples itself, do not miss the Temple of Concordia (one of the best preserved in the world), the Temple of Heracles, and the Regional Archaeological Museum of Agrigento (Official Museum Website). In the city of Agrigento, explore the historic center, San Gerlando Cathedral, and the Garden of Kolymbethra.
Of course! First, wear comfortable shoes—you will do a lot of walking. Do not forget water, sunscreen, and a hat, especially in summer. Consider using an audio guide (ours can be your best ally!) or hiring a local tour guide to better understand the site’s rich history. And of course, do not forget your camera! The light at sunrise or sunset is perfect for spectacular photos.
