Discover the Garden of Kolymbethra in the Free Municipal Consortium of Agrigento. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
The Garden of Kolymbethra is usually open every day from 10:00 a.m. until sunset (approximately until 6:00 p.m. in winter and 8:00 p.m. in summer), but I always recommend checking the exact hours on its official website, as they may vary seasonally. It is located in the heart of the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento, and you can easily get there by car (there is parking nearby) or even on foot if you are already visiting the Valley. Don’t miss it!
Admission to the Garden of Kolymbethra is not free, but the price is quite reasonable considering the beauty of the place. Generally, the cost is around 5 euros per person, with possible discounts for children, students, or groups. I recommend checking the official FAI Foundation page at fondoambiente.it for updated prices and possible combined offers with admission to the Valley of the Temples.
To fully enjoy the Garden of Kolymbethra and appreciate its unique atmosphere, I suggest setting aside between 1 and 2 hours. That will allow you to stroll along its paths, admire the fruit trees and water springs, and take in the tranquility of the surroundings. It is a place to relax and immerse yourself in history and nature.
The Garden of Kolymbethra has a history stretching back thousands of years to the time of the ancient Greeks. It was once an ancient basin or pool, known as the 'Kolymbethra,' which formed part of the sophisticated hydraulic system of ancient Akragas for water supply. Today it is a lush garden of citrus trees, olive trees, and other Mediterranean plants, managed by FAI, representing an oasis of greenery and a living testimony to ingenious ancient engineering. It is a true miracle of nature and history, rescued and revitalized.
The Garden of Kolymbethra is beautiful at any time, but spring (April-May), when the citrus trees are in bloom and their scent fills the air, or autumn (September-October), when temperatures are milder, are ideal times. As for the time of day, I suggest visiting early in the morning to avoid the midday heat and crowds, or late in the afternoon to enjoy the golden light and a more intimate atmosphere.
Because of its historic nature and uneven terrain, the Garden of Kolymbethra may present some difficulties for people with reduced mobility or those using wheelchairs, especially in certain areas with dirt paths or steps. However, there are main paths that are more accessible. I recommend contacting the FAI Foundation directly at [email protected] or by phone for detailed accessibility information and to plan your visit.+39 0922 986214.
You are in the heart of the Valley of the Temples! Right next to the Garden of Kolymbethra you have the impressive and majestic archaeological area of Agrigento, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You should not miss the temples of Concordia, Juno, and Hercules. Also, the Regional Archaeological Museum of Agrigento is a must-visit if you want to delve deeper into the history of the area. One day will not be enough to see everything!
Of course. For the best visit, I recommend wearing comfortable shoes for walking along the paths and, if you go in summer, protecting yourself from the sun with a hat and sunscreen, as well as bringing a bottle of water. Consider buying a combined ticket if you are also planning to visit the Valley of the Temples to save some money. And of course, don’t forget your camera to capture the beauty of this unique place!
