St. Patrick's Well usually opens from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM in summer (April-September) and from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM in winter (October-March). Opening hours may vary, so I recommend checking the official website to confirm before your visit. The entrance is on Viale Sangallo, near Albornoz Fortress.
The general admission ticket for an adult costs about 5 euros. There are often discounts for students, seniors, and groups. It is a good idea to buy tickets in advance or at the ticket office on arrival, although there are not usually long lines. For updated pricing information, visit: OrvietoViva.
Usually, about 30 to 45 minutes is enough to go down, explore its impressive architecture, admire the views from the bottom, and come back up. If you stop to read the information panels and take photographs, you could stretch it to an hour. There is no rush, but it is not really a place to spend the whole day either!
It was built in the 16th century by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger, commissioned by Pope Clement VII, to ensure Orvieto's water supply in case of a siege. Its ingenious design, with two concentric spiral ramps that never cross, allowed water jars to be carried up and down without interference, ensuring access to water even with pack animals. It is an engineering marvel of its time.
Spring and autumn are ideal thanks to the mild weather and smaller crowds. During summer, early in the morning or late in the afternoon can be more pleasant to avoid the heat and the busiest times. It is always a good time to visit, but if you are looking for peace and quiet, avoid the middle of the day in high season.
Because of its original design with stairs and spiral ramps, St. Patrick's Well is not accessible for wheelchairs or people with very limited mobility. The descent involves many steps and ramps, which can be physically demanding. I recommend contacting the Orvieto tourist office for accessibility options in the city.
Orvieto is full of gems! Right next door you have the incredible Albornoz Fortress with its botanical gardens and spectacular views. A short walk will take you to the majestic Orvieto Cathedral, one of the most beautiful cathedrals in Italy, and Orvieto Underground, a fascinating network of caves and tunnels. Be sure to explore the medieval streets of the historic center as well.
Wear comfortable shoes, as the ramps can be long and a little slippery. Do not forget your camera, since the views from the bottom and the unusual structure are very photogenic. Consider combining your visit with Albornoz Fortress and a walk through the center. And do not forget to look up and down to appreciate the full scale of the work!
