Discover Riomaggiore in Cinque Terre. A unique experience to explore its history and significance.
Riomaggiore is a freely accessible town open 24 hours a day, although the best way to get there is by the 'Cinque Terre Express' train from La Spezia. We do not recommend going by car because parking is difficult; you can check updated train schedules on Trenitalia.
Walking through the streets and harbor of Riomaggiore is completely free. You only need to pay if you want to use the hiking trails that connect the villages (the Blue Trail), for which you will need the 'Cinque Terre Card' available on the official park website.
To explore the harbor, visit the Church of San Giovanni Battista, and take the iconic photos, we recommend spending between 2 and 3 hours. If you plan to hike or enjoy the local cuisine at a leisurely pace, set aside half a day.
Founded in the 13th century, Riomaggiore is famous for its vertical tower houses, built this way for defense, and for its historic wine production. As part of Cinque Terre, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, noted for the unique interaction between people and the rugged natural landscape.
Sunset at the harbor is the most spectacular time to see the colors of the houses glow. To avoid mass tourism and extreme heat, the best times are the months of May and September.
Riomaggiore presents significant accessibility challenges due to its steep streets and numerous stairs. Although the station area and the main street are somewhat easier to navigate, general wheelchair access is limited and requires planning.
Do not miss Manarola, the next village to the north, ideally reached via the famous 'Via dell'Amore' (check whether it is open due to works). You can also take a ferry to visit Vernazza and see the coast from the sea.
Wear very comfortable, non-slip footwear, as you will be walking on steep slopes. We suggest complementing your walk with our audio guide to discover the secrets of the local fishermen and checking trail conditions on the Cinque Terre website before setting out.
