The cathedral is open Monday to Sunday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It is easily reached on foot from the center of Trieste (15–20 minutes uphill) or by bus line 24. Check for schedule changes at Trieste Tourism.
Admission to the cathedral is free, but donations for maintenance are welcome. Guided tours or access to the bell tower may have a fee. Check updated prices on the official website.
The main visit takes about 45–60 minutes to admire the mosaics, chapels, and panoramic views. If you also include the Diocesan Museum and the adjacent castle, allow 2 hours.
It has been a symbol of Triestine identity since the 14th century, built over Roman ruins. It stands out for its blend of Byzantine and Romanesque styles, and for its spectacular apse mosaic dedicated to Saint Justus.
We recommend spring or autumn for the mild weather. Avoid July and August because of the heat and heavy tourism. Tuesday and Thursday mornings are less crowded than weekends.
Access is limited due to steps and uneven ground typical of historic buildings. Ask about portable ramps by calling the Diocesan Museum (+39 040 309362). The website details accessibility here.
Do not miss Saint Justus Castle (with sea views), the Roman Theatre 200 meters away, and the Basilica of San Silvestro. The viewpoint in Cathedral Square offers spectacular panoramas. More suggestions at our Trieste guide.
Wear comfortable shoes because of the cobblestones, and respect silence during Mass (Sundays 10:00 AM–12:00 PM). We suggest our audio-guided tour with secret stories about the mosaics and bell tower.
