Un bosque sagrado en Asís que evoca la vida y el mensaje de San Francisco, donde senderos entre robles centenarios invitan a la reflexión y al contacto con la naturaleza.
Bosco di San Francesco is open every day of the year from dawn to dusk, approximately from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. in summer and earlier in winter. To get there, you can reach it from Assisi on foot or by car via the SP250; there is free parking near the main entrance. More details are available on the official Assisi tourism website.
Entry to the woodland is free, as it is a protected natural area open to the public. However, if you choose a guided visit or the interpretation center, there may be a symbolic cost of 5–10 euros. Check the official Bosco website for reservations.
A typical visit lasts between 1 and 2 hours if you follow the main paths, but you can extend it to 3 hours if you explore longer routes. It is ideal for a relaxed walk, with time to reflect at the historic spots.
This sacred woodland is where Saint Francis of Assisi withdrew to pray and founded his Franciscan order in the 13th century, inspired by nature and peace. Today, it represents a site of spiritual pilgrimage and environmental conservation, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of Assisi.
Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are ideal because of the mild weather and vibrant colors, avoiding the summer heat. Visit early in the morning to enjoy the tranquility and fewer crowds, ideally between 8:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m.
The main paths are accessible, with paved routes for wheelchairs, but some secondary trails are uneven and steep. It is recommended to contact the visitor center at +39 075 813 157 for assistance or adapted routes; rest areas are available.
Nearby in Assisi, do not miss the Basilica of Saint Francis, about 2 km away, and Rocca Maggiore, a medieval castle. You can also visit the Eremo delle Carceri, another Franciscan retreat just 1 km away, for a complementary experience. Explore more on the Italian tourism website.
Bring comfortable shoes, water, and sunscreen, as there are trails with gentle climbs. Join a free audio guide at the center to learn more about the history, and respect nature by avoiding littering. If you are traveling in a group, book ahead during high season to avoid waiting.
