A fascinating journey through the history, architecture, and cultural legacy of the iconic Derry Walls, a living testament to Northern Ireland's past.
The Derry Walls are open at all times, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, allowing you to walk them at your own pace. There are several access points around the historic city center, making entry easy from different directions. You can find more information about access at the Derry Visitor Centre: Visit Derry.
Good news! Access to the Derry Walls is completely free for all visitors. You do not need to buy tickets or pay any fee to enjoy this historic walk. However, if you would like to enrich your visit, you can choose a guided tour, which does have an associated cost.
To walk the full circuit of the walls at a relaxed pace, I recommend allowing at least 1 to 2 hours. This will give you time to enjoy the views, read the information plaques, and take photographs. If you join a guided tour, the duration is usually similar, around 1.5 to 2 hours.
The Derry Walls are an impressive symbol of Irish history. Built in the early 17th century, they are Ireland’s last completely intact city walls. They witnessed key sieges and conflicts, especially the Great Siege of 1689. Walking them will help you better understand the city’s turbulent past and resilience. The Derry Museum, very close by, can expand your knowledge: Derry City & District Council Museums.
Any time of year is good, but spring (April to May) and autumn (September to October) offer milder weather and fewer crowds. If you want to avoid the busiest times, I suggest visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon. Sunsets from the walls are especially beautiful and provide fantastic light for photos.
The Derry Walls are mostly accessible, with elevators and ramps at several access points to make entry and exit easier, although some sections may have steps or gentle slopes. It is recommended to check the Visit Derry Accessibility Map for detailed information about barrier-free routes.
Derry is full of history! Right next to the walls, you should not miss St Columb's Cathedral, Free Derry Corner, and the famous Bogside murals. The Tower Museum and the Derry Museum are also within walking distance and are excellent places to learn more about the city’s history. For more ideas, visit Visit Derry - See and Do.
I recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes, as the route is about 1.5 km long. If the weather is unpredictable, a light waterproof jacket can save the day. Download an audio guide or consider joining a guided tour to better understand what you are seeing—it is well worth it. And do not forget your camera, the views are spectacular.
