Tara Mines is currently an active zinc and lead mine operated by Boliden, so it is not open to the general public for tourist tours for safety reasons. They occasionally arrange educational visits or specialized group visits upon strict request, but it is not an open-door attraction.

As it is a private industrial facility rather than a tourist attraction, there are no tickets or box offices for public sales. If you are interested in the geology of the area, I recommend visiting the local museums in Navan, which explain the mining history at no cost.

Since access to the interior is restricted, viewing the facilities from the outside or driving around the surrounding area will only take about 15 to 20 minutes. It is ideal to combine this brief stop with a longer visit to the town of Navan or the Boyne Valley.

Tara Mines is the largest zinc mine in all of Europe and has been a vital economic engine for Ireland since its development in the 1970s. Its depth and technical complexity make it a global benchmark in modern mining engineering.

The best time is between May and September, when the Irish weather is more favorable for exploring County Meath. On weekdays, you may be able to see the industrial activity in the area, which gives an idea of the scale of the operation.

The surrounding public roads can be traveled by car, but there are no adapted walking paths or wheelchair-friendly tourist infrastructure at the industrial site. The visit is mainly visual and is best done from the car.

You are very close to one of Ireland’s most legendary sites: the Hill of Tara, the ancient seat of the High Kings of Ireland. I also recommend visiting Brú na Bóinne, famous for its Neolithic tombs.
