Established in 1998, it is the only national park on Ireland’s west coast and protects 11,000 hectares of dunes, wetlands, and forests, making it a key site for migratory birds such as the red-breasted goose. It is part of Wild Nephin Ballycroy, highlighting its role in conserving Irish biodiversity.
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) are ideal for watching migratory birds, while summer offers longer days for hiking. Avoid winter if you dislike rain, although the landscape is spectacular in any season; check the forecast at Met Éireann.
Some trails, such as the beach trail, are wheelchair accessible, and there are ramps at the visitor center, but much of the terrain is uneven and muddy. It is recommended to contact the center for adapted guidance; phone: +353 98 41753.
