❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What time can I visit Salthill Promenade, and is it easy to get there?

Absolutely! Salthill Promenade is an outdoor public space, so it is open 24/7, 365 days a year. You can easily get there on foot from Galway city centre, by bus (several routes go through Salthill), or by car, with parking options available nearby.

Do I need to pay to enter the Prom or use the facilities?

Not at all! Walking, running, or simply enjoying the views at Salthill Promenade is completely free. Enjoy the fresh Atlantic air at no cost.

How long would it take to explore Salthill Promenade at a relaxed pace?

It depends on your pace, but to enjoy the Prom along its full length, I would recommend setting aside at least 1–2 hours. If you decide to do the famous 'Kick the Wall' tradition at the end, add a few extra minutes!

What history or interesting facts about Salthill Promenade should I know?

Salthill is a traditional Irish seaside resort with a rich history dating back to the 18th century. The Prom itself has been a gathering and leisure spot for generations, witnessing countless summers, festivals, and the comings and goings of the people of Galway. It is a place with real soul!

What is the best time of day to walk along Salthill Promenade?

Without a doubt, my favourite times are sunset, when the sky fills with incredible colours over the bay, or early morning to enjoy the peace and fresh air. During the summer months (June–August), the atmosphere is livelier, but any time is good for a walk.

Is Salthill Promenade accessible for wheelchair users or people with pushchairs?

Yes, most of the Prom is fully accessible. It is a wide, level walkway, ideal for wheelchairs and pushchairs. There are ramps at various points to access the beach and swimming areas.

Is there anything interesting to see near the Prom or in Salthill?

Absolutely! Right on the Prom, you have Galway Atlantaquaria (Ireland’s National Aquarium), ideal if you are travelling with children. You also have Blackrock Diving Tower, a local icon, and plenty of cafés and restaurants along the promenade where you can stop for a bite or a drink.

Any extra tips to make the most of my visit to Salthill Promenade?

My best advice is: wrap up well! Irish weather can be unpredictable, even in summer. Do not forget your camera for those spectacular views and, if the mood strikes, a takeaway coffee while you stroll is the perfect finishing touch.
