Discover Aguada Fort at Calangute Beach. A unique experience to learn about its history and significance.
The fort is usually open every day of the week, from 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM. It is located at Sinquerim Beach, and the easiest way to get there is by taxi or by renting a scooter from nearby areas such as Candolim or Calangute.
Admission is very affordable, with different rates for Indian citizens and foreign tourists (the latter pay around 300 rupees). You can check updated prices and book on the Archaeological Survey of India website.
In general, a visit of 60 to 90 minutes is enough to walk along the walls, see the lighthouse, and enjoy the views. If you use an audio guide to fully understand its history, we recommend setting aside around 2 hours.
Built in 1612 by the Portuguese, it was a key defense against the Marathas and the Dutch. Its name, 'Aguada,' comes from the huge freshwater springs inside that supplied ships sailing along the spice route.
The best time is between November and February, when the weather is cooler and drier. We recommend going early in the morning or just before sunset to avoid the intense heat and enjoy spectacular views.
Unfortunately, access is limited for wheelchairs due to the rocky terrain, steep stairs, and uneven paths. If you have reduced mobility, you can enjoy the exterior views, but access inside the walls is difficult.
Right next to it is the beautiful Sinquerim Beach and the old Aguada Jail, which has been renovated as a museum. For more general information about the area, you can visit the Goa Tourism website.
Wear comfortable walking shoes, a hat, and bring plenty of water, as there is little shade inside the site. For an immersive experience, do not forget to download the corresponding audio guide at IAudioguia.com before entering.
