For the full glacier hiking experience, you should allow between 3 and 4 hours. If you only plan to take photos from the base and enjoy the scenery without going onto the ice, 45 minutes will be enough.

Mýrdalsjökull is fascinating because it covers the active and feared Katla volcano. The ice here tells the story of past eruptions through layers of black ash, creating a landscape of contrast unlike anywhere else in the world.

Glacier hiking is available year-round, but if you want to visit the vivid blue ice caves, winter, from November to March, is the prime season. In summer, the contrast between the ice and the surrounding green landscape is spectacular.

Due to the rugged nature of the glacier terrain, the excursions are not suitable for wheelchairs or people with limited mobility. However, the parking area and views from the base may be accessible with assistance.
