A place where nature reveals its power through hot springs, a haven of peace in Iceland’s untamed landscape.
The hot springs, known locally as Pollurinn, are open 24 hours a day all year round, giving you complete freedom for your visit. They are located just outside the village of Tálknafjörður (in the Westfjords region), and you can easily reach them by car by following the road along the fjord.
Access to these pools is completely free, which is a great advantage in Iceland. However, there is a small honesty box in the changing rooms where donations for the maintenance and cleaning of the facilities are accepted and appreciated.
A stop of between 45 minutes and one hour is ideal for relaxing, enjoying the different temperatures of the three pools, and admiring the views. It is the perfect amount of time to rest your body without rushing after traveling the fjord roads.
These waters have been the main social gathering place for local residents for decades, making use of the area’s natural geothermal energy. Their cultural importance lies in their authenticity: this is not a tourist spa, but a genuine Icelandic experience of connection with nature and community.
Any time of year is good, but winter offers the magical possibility of seeing the Northern Lights while you are immersed in hot water. As for the time of day, sunset or nighttime are spectacular moments because of the tranquility and the views over Tálknafjörður Fjord.
The facilities are rustic; although you can park very close, you still have to walk a few steps over natural ground and basic stairs to enter the water. There are no ramps or modern accessibility infrastructure, so it may be difficult for wheelchairs.
In addition to exploring the fishing village itself, you are in a strategic position to visit the impressive Dynjandi waterfall, which is at a reasonable driving distance. You can also visit the geothermal pool in Bolungarvík if you continue your route north through the fjords.
Always bring your towel and swimsuit, and remember to shower before entering the water (there are simple changing rooms and showers on site), as required by Icelandic hygiene rules. Also bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated, as the geothermal heat is powerful.
