A journey into Iceland’s rural past, immersed in the serenity of Blönduós and its historic cottage.
The museum is open during the summer months, from June to August, every day from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. It is located in Blönduós, Northwestern Region, 245 km from Reykjavik via Route 1. You can find the exact location details at northiceland.is.
General admission is 1,500 ISK (approximately €11), with discounts for seniors over 67 and visitors under 18. No advance reservations are required for individual visits. Check updated prices at visitblonduos.is.
The visit usually takes between 30 minutes and 1 hour, enough time to explore the 5 main rooms and the permanent exhibition on 19th-century rural Icelandic life.
This turf house, built in 1840, is one of the few preserved examples of traditional Icelandic architecture. It was inhabited until 1955 and shows how rural families lived before the country’s modernization.
We recommend visiting from June to August, when the museum is open and the weather makes it possible to enjoy the surroundings. Afternoons are ideal because of the midnight sun in summer.
As it is a historic building with narrow doors and steps, the interior is not wheelchair accessible. However, the outdoor area and the introductory exhibit in the entrance hall are adapted.
Very close by you can visit: 1) the modern church Blönduóskirkja (2 km) 2) the Icelandic Textile Museum 3) the Hrútey ponds for birdwatching. More information at west.is.
1) Wear sturdy shoes for the gravel paths 2) Visit the Blönduós tourist information center first for maps 3) Don’t forget your camera: there are spectacular views of the Blanda River from the cottage.
