Saxhóll Crater is open 24 hours a day all year round, as it is an outdoor natural landmark with no gates. Access is very easy, as it is located right beside Road 574; you will find a small parking area at the foot of the crater where the staircase begins.

The visit is completely free. You do not need to book or buy any ticket to access the parking area or climb the metal staircase leading to the summit, making it an essential budget-friendly stop on the peninsula.

It is a fairly quick visit; the climb up the stairs usually takes about 10 minutes depending on your fitness level. We recommend allowing between 30 and 45 minutes in total to go up, take panoramic photos of the glacier, and come back down at a relaxed pace.

Saxhóll is a crater about 3,000 years old that offers a unique perspective on Icelandic geology and spectacular views toward Snæfellsjökull National Park. Its importance lies in allowing visitors to walk directly along the rim of an extinct volcano safely and without the need for technical equipment.

Summer is ideal because of the milder weather and the midnight sun, which allows nighttime visits in natural light. However, winter sunsets (if the road is clear) offer incredible golden light over the snow and lava field for photography lovers.

Although it has a wide and safe metal staircase ("The Stairway to Heaven") that makes the ascent much easier, the slope is steep and it is not suitable for wheelchairs. It is manageable for anyone with متوسط mobility and for children, but it does require climbing continuous steps to the top.

You are in a privileged location; less than 10 minutes away by car you will find the famous black pebble beach of Djúpalónssandur. We also recommend visiting the impressive Lóndrangar cliffs and the Malarrif Lighthouse by continuing along the coastal road.

The wind at the top of the crater is usually much stronger than at the base, so bring a windproof jacket and a hat even if the weather looks good. Also, although there are stairs, wear sturdy closed-toe shoes so you can walk safely around the parking area and the summit.
