The beach is a natural site open 24 hours a day, reachable by driving about 15–20 minutes from Bolungarvík along a gravel road. Keep in mind that the road may close in winter due to snow; always check conditions at road.is before setting out.

Access to Skálavík is completely free; it is a wild landscape with no ticket booths or barriers. It is one of Iceland’s natural luxuries, where the only price is absolute respect for the untouched environment.

I recommend allowing between 45 minutes and an hour to walk along the black sand, enjoy the sound of the Atlantic, and take photos at a relaxed pace. If you bring our audio guide, you will have plenty of time to listen to local stories as you explore.

Skálavík was a fishing settlement inhabited until the mid-20th century and the setting for stories of extreme survival. Today, only summer houses remain, along with the echo of Icelandic folklore about the harsh living conditions in the Westfjords.

Without a doubt, the summer months from June to August are ideal, as the road is passable and you can enjoy the midnight sun. In winter, access is usually impossible for conventional vehicles because of heavy snowfall.

Access is limited; you can enjoy panoramic views from the car or the roadside, but getting down to the beach involves uneven sand and stones. There are no paved walkways, so it is not recommended for wheelchairs.

Take advantage of your trip to visit the Ósvör Maritime Museum, a fascinating replica of a 19th-century fishing outpost. We also recommend going up to the summit of Bolafjall Mountain, which offers spectacular views over the fjords.

Bring waterproof and windproof clothing, as the weather can change in seconds, and make sure your fuel tank is full before leaving Bolungarvík. And here is a pro tip: bring binoculars, as whales or seals can sometimes be spotted from the shore.
