A cultural space in Iceland's Westfjords, dedicated to the unique work of Samuel Jonsson.
The Samuel Jonsson Art Gallery is open from June to August, generally from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It is located in Bíldudalur, in the Westfjords, and is easily reached via Route 63. We recommend confirming opening hours before your visit at Visit Westfjords.
Admission is free, although voluntary donations are appreciated to help maintain this cultural space. No advance booking is required.
Between 30 and 60 minutes is recommended to explore the outdoor sculptures and the works on display. It is ideal to combine the visit with other attractions in Bíldudalur for a more complete excursion.
Samuel Jonsson was a self-taught farmer who, after retiring, created this unique artistic complex with concrete sculptures inspired by Icelandic tales. It is an extraordinary example of outsider art in Iceland.
Summer, from June to August, when Westfjords roads are accessible and you can enjoy the landscape under the midnight sun. Afternoon hours offer better light for photography.
The site is partially accessible but uneven, with gravel paths and some slopes. On rainy days it can be slippery. Sturdy footwear is recommended, and visitors should check current conditions.
Just a 5-minute walk away is Bíldudalur's fascinating Sea Monster Museum. It is also worth visiting the Arnarstapi cliffs, about 1 hour by car, and the black sand beaches of Djúpalónssandur, about 1.5 hours away.
1. Bring warm, waterproof clothing, as the weather changes quickly. 2. Wear comfortable shoes for walking on uneven ground. 3. Do not forget your camera: the contrast between the sculptures and the landscape is magical.
