El Museo Arqueológico de Yarumela resguarda tesoros de una de las culturas preclásicas más antiguas de Honduras, revelando los misterios de un centro ceremonial maya tempranito.
The museum is generally open Monday to Sunday, usually from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It is located in the department of La Paz, just a few minutes from the city of the same name; you can find the exact route here: View location on Google Maps.
The entrance fee is very affordable and symbolic, intended for the maintenance of the site by the local community (usually around 20–50 lempiras). We recommend bringing cash in the local currency, as credit cards are not usually accepted at the ticket office.
To explore both the small exhibition hall and the main archaeological mounds, we recommend setting aside between 1 hour and 1 hour and a half. It is a concise but history-rich visit that is best enjoyed without rushing.
Yarumela is essential for understanding the Formative period of Mesoamerica, as it is one of the oldest settlements (more than 3,000 years old) linked to the proto-Lenca people. It stands out for 'El Cerrito,' a monumental structure that served as a ceremonial and lookout center.
Visiting during the dry season (from November to April) is recommended to make access to the archaeological trails easier. The ideal time is early in the morning, before 11:00 a.m., to avoid the intense heat of the Comayagua Valley.
Access to the covered museum area is relatively easy, but climbing the mounds or exploring the entire archaeological park can be difficult for wheelchairs because of the uneven terrain. It is recommended to ask the staff upon arrival for help accessing the flatter areas.
Take advantage of your trip to visit the colonial city of Comayagua, located about 20 minutes away, or explore the municipality of Cane. Both options offer excellent food and historic architecture to round out your day.
Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes for walking on dirt paths, and bring sun protection and drinking water. For an immersive experience, we suggest downloading our audio guide in advance at IAudioguia.com and discovering the secrets the stones do not reveal at first glance.
