Donde los muertos mayas cuentan historias de poder, traición y huesos de jaguar mordidos
The Maya Cemetery is part of the Copán Ruins Archaeological Site. The Copán Ruins Archaeological Park is open to the public every day from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. It is located about 1 km from the center of Copán Ruins and is easily reached on foot, by taxi, or by tuk-tuk.
The Maya Cemetery does not have a separate admission ticket, as it is part of the Copán Ruins Archaeological Park. General admission to the park costs $20 USD for foreigners (or the equivalent in Honduran lempiras). This ticket gives you access to the entire site, including the sculptures and funerary mounds.
If you focus only on the Maya Cemetery area, you could spend between 30 minutes and 1 hour there. However, to fully appreciate the Copán Ruins Archaeological Park and its museums, a complete visit can take between 3 and 5 hours. We recommend using our audio guide service to make the most of your time.
The Maya Cemetery is actually an area of funerary mounds where important burials of Copán’s elite have been found. It is crucial for understanding the funerary practices, social hierarchy, and beliefs about the underworld in Maya civilization. The discoveries here have provided valuable insight into Copán’s dynastic history.
The best time to visit is during the dry season, from November to April, when the weather is cooler and there is less chance of rain. During the day, I recommend going early in the morning, right when it opens, or late in the afternoon to avoid the strongest heat and the crowds, especially on weekdays.
Much of the Copán Ruins Archaeological Park has dirt paths and uneven ground that can make access difficult for wheelchairs or strollers. Some areas of the Maya Cemetery, being mounds, require walking over irregular terrain. Caution is recommended, and if possible, plan ahead by calling the park for specific accessibility information: +504 2651-4043.
In addition to the Copán Ruins Archaeological Park itself, which includes the Acropolis, the Great Plaza, and the Rosalila Tunnel, you can visit the Maya Sculpture Museum and the Regional Museum of Archaeology. The Macaw Mountain Bird Park is also a popular visit and is very close by. The town of Copán Ruins itself is charming to explore.
Bring sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and plenty of water, as it gets very hot and there is little shade. Wear comfortable clothing and suitable walking shoes.
