A fascinating journey through the past and vibrant culture of the East Berbice Corentyne region in Guyana.
The museum is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, and is closed on weekends. It is located in Number Ten, a 20-minute drive from New Amsterdam. To confirm updated hours, contact the Ministry of Tourism: Official Guyana tourism website.
Admission has a symbolic cost (approximately $2 USD). Children and local residents with ID may enter free of charge. Local cash (Guyanese dollars) is accepted.
We recommend 1 hour to explore the main exhibits. If you interact with local guides or spend more time with the collections, it could extend to 1 hour and 30 minutes.
It preserves the heritage of the Berbice communities: Indigenous Amerindian objects, Dutch colonial agricultural tools, and archives on the sugar industry that shaped the region in the 19th century.
Visit during the dry season (between February and April or August to October). This will help you avoid heavy rain and enjoy better access from New Amsterdam.
Access includes steps without a ramp and limited interior space. Contact +592 123-4567 in advance to request assistance. Visiting with a companion is recommended if you need support.
Within 30 minutes you will find: the New Amsterdam Market (colonial), Fort Nassau (17th-century Dutch ruins), and the Corentyne River sugar cane plantations for agricultural tours.
1) Bring mosquito repellent. 2) Hire the museum’s volunteer guides (available for a donation) to hear local stories. 3) Visit early to avoid the hottest hours of the day.
