Lethem Rodeo Ground comes alive exclusively during the Easter weekend for the famous Rupununi Rodeo; the rest of the year it is an open space. Access is easy from central Lethem, which you can reach by air from Georgetown or by overland transport through the jungle trail.
Rodeo tickets are very affordable and vary each year, and they are generally bought in cash directly at the ticket booth on the day of the event. It is advisable to bring Guyanese dollars, as credit cards are usually not accepted at the entrance gates.
To experience the full cowboy culture, I recommend setting aside at least one full day, although ideally you should enjoy both days of the weekend. The festive atmosphere continues into the night with music and local celebrations.
This place is the heart of the cowboy culture of the Rupununi savannas, a tradition that has blended Indigenous, Guyanese, and Brazilian influences since the 1960s. It is much more than a sport; it is a celebration of ranching identity and the skill of the region’s ranchers.
Definitely during Holy Week, when the rodeo takes place and the weather marks the transition between the dry and rainy seasons. Visiting at another time will let you see the landscape, but you will miss the electric atmosphere of the main event.
You should keep in mind that this is a rustic open-air venue with dirt ground and wooden bleachers, so accessibility is limited and it can be difficult for wheelchairs. Going with a companion is recommended to make moving across the uneven terrain easier.
Make the most of your trip by visiting the refreshing Kumu Falls, which are a short taxi ride away, or cross the Takutu Bridge to visit the Brazilian border town of Bonfim. The majestic Kanuku Mountains also provide a stunning backdrop for excursions.
The savanna sun is relentless, so it is vital to bring a hat, high-SPF sunscreen, and stay well hydrated. Also, book your accommodation months in advance, as hotels in Lethem fill up completely during the rodeo dates.
