❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How can I get to Iwokrama Forest and what are the visiting hours?

Iwokrama Forest is mainly accessed by river from Itaballi or by small aircraft to the Fair View airstrip. It does not have fixed opening hours, but all visits require prior coordination with authorized operators. For access details, see: Iwokrama Visitor Guide.

How much does it cost to visit the reserve, and do I need to book in advance?

The conservation fee is approximately $25 USD per person per day, plus accommodation costs ($80-$150 USD/night) and local guides ($50-$80 USD/day). Booking through authorized operators is mandatory. See updated rates at: Official Rates.

How many days do you recommend to properly explore the forest?

A minimum of 3 days is recommended to enjoy key experiences: walking the canopy, spotting macaws at Aturia, navigating the Essequibo River, and nighttime caiman watching. Five-day packages allow you to venture into remote areas with local communities.

Why is this reserve ecologically important?

It is one of the world’s last pristine tropical forests, protected since 1996 for sustainable conservation research. It is home to 1,500 plant species, 500 bird species (including the harpy eagle), and unique mammals such as the black jaguar and giant otters.

What is the best time of year to visit?

The dry season (September to November) is ideal for hiking and river travel. In the wet season (May to August), some areas are inaccessible, but it is excellent for spotting migratory birds. Avoid December to April because of heavy rains.

Is it accessible for people with reduced mobility?

Most activities require good physical condition (2-6 km hikes over uneven terrain). Lodges such as Atta Rainforest Lodge have adapted rooms, but not all excursions are feasible. Contact in advance: [email protected].

What other interesting places are near Itaballi?

You can also visit: 1) the legendary Mount Roraima (4 hours by 4x4), 2) Kaieteur Falls (the world’s largest single-drop waterfall), and 3) the capital, Georgetown (colonial architecture). More info at: Guyana Tourism.

What should I bring for a comfortable and safe visit?

Essentials: mosquito repellent with DEET, binoculars for wildlife, waterproof boots, a headlamp, and quick-dry clothing. We recommend medical insurance with evacuation coverage. Full list here: Iwokrama Checklist.
