The ceremonial and administrative heart of the ancient Maya city of Tikal, surrounded by towering temples and stelae.
Tikal National Park is open daily from 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM. To reach the Great Plaza once inside the park, follow the well-marked main trails. I suggest checking the park map usually provided at the entrance or, even better, using our Tikal audio guide so you do not miss anything.
The Great Plaza is inside Tikal National Park, so your visit is included in the general park admission ticket. The cost for foreign visitors is approximately Q150.00 (Guatemalan quetzals), and it is paid at the park entrance. We recommend bringing cash, although some ticket booths accept cards.
To fully enjoy the Great Plaza, Temples I and II, and the other important adjacent structures, I recommend at least 1.5 to 2 hours. If you enjoy photography or simply soaking up the ancient atmosphere, you could extend it to 3 hours. Keep in mind that this is only one part of the entire national park.
It is the ceremonial heart of one of the most powerful Maya cities. Here you will find the Central Acropolis, the North Acropolis, and the famous Temple of the Great Jaguar (Temple I) and Temple of the Masks (Temple II), where the most important rituals were performed and rulers were buried. It is a living testament to the greatness of Maya civilization.
To avoid crowds and intense heat, I suggest visiting the Great Plaza early in the morning, just after opening, or late in the afternoon. The dry season, from November to May, is ideal for the weather, but the rainy season, from June to October, offers lush vegetation and fewer tourists, although showers are possible. A sunrise from Temple IV is unforgettable.
Unfortunately, Tikal National Park, including the Great Plaza and its trails, has uneven terrain, roots, and some stairways. This makes access very difficult for wheelchairs or people with very limited mobility. We recommend contacting the park administration directly at +502 7926 0700 for more precise information about possible adapted routes or assistance.
Very close to the Great Plaza, you should not miss Temple V, Temple IV, the tallest structure with the best panoramic views over the jungle canopy, and Complexes Q and R with their impressive plazas. The South Acropolis also offers a different perspective. The park is huge, so plan your route carefully.
Absolutely. Bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Consider hiring a certified local guide to better understand every detail, or download our Tikal audio guide to have the information at your fingertips. And of course, do not forget your camera and get ready for the magic.
