Donde un rey maya enterró a sus enemigos... y su mejor colección de jade
Tikal National Park, where the Temple of the Great Jaguar is located, generally opens from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM every day. The best way to get there is through an organized tour from Flores or by private transport, since the temple is inside the protected area. You can find more information on how to get there on the park's official website: Tikal Official Park.
Admission to Tikal National Park costs approximately $20 USD for non-resident foreign visitors. This ticket gives you access to the entire archaeological complex, including the Temple of the Great Jaguar. It is recommended to check updated prices and payment options on the official website of the Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT): INGUAT.
To fully enjoy the Temple of the Great Jaguar and explore the main nearby temples and plazas, it is recommended to allow at least half a day, around 3 to 4 hours. If you want to venture into the park's less explored routes and observe wildlife, plan a full day of about 6 to 8 hours.
The Temple of the Great Jaguar, also known as Temple I, is a funerary pyramid built around 734 AD for the Maya ruler Jasaw Chan K'awiil I. It represents a monumental architectural and astronomical achievement of the Maya civilization, serving as a focal point for religious ceremonies and a celestial observatory. Its name, 'Great Jaguar,' comes from the carved lintel on its doorway, which shows a jaguar figure.
The best time to visit Tikal is during the dry season, from November to May, to avoid rain and intense humidity. During the day, we recommend arriving first thing in the morning (right when it opens at 6 AM) to enjoy sunrise, fewer tourists, and more pleasant temperatures. It is also an excellent time for birdwatching and spotting other animals.
Tikal National Park has uneven terrain, with dirt roads, trails, and many stairs at the temples, including the main access to the Temple of the Great Jaguar. This can be a significant challenge for people with reduced mobility. While some central areas are flatter, it is advisable to contact park staff or your tour operator for specific accessibility information: [email protected].
Within Tikal National Park, besides the Temple of the Great Jaguar (Temple I), you should not miss the Great Plaza, Temple II (Temple of the Masks), Temple III, Temple V, and the imposing Temple IV, from whose summit you can enjoy stunning panoramic views of the jungle and other temples. You can also explore the Central Acropolis and Group E.
Of course! Bring enough water, sunscreen, insect repellent, and comfortable walking shoes. Consider hiring a certified guide to better understand Tikal's rich history and meaning. Do not touch or climb structures that are not designated for it, and respect the local flora and fauna. And of course, don't forget your camera to capture the majesty of the place!
