Semuc Champey is usually open every day from 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM. To get there, the most common option is to take a 4x4 or pickup truck from Lanquín, the nearest town and the base for most tours. The ride can be a bit bumpy, but it is well worth it!
Admission for foreign visitors to Semuc Champey is Q50 (Guatemalan quetzals). For Guatemalans, the cost is Q30. There are no extra fees to visit the pools, but some activities such as K'anba Cave or tubing have an additional cost that is arranged locally.
To fully enjoy Semuc Champey and its surroundings, I recommend setting aside at least half a day, around 4 to 6 hours. That gives you enough time to hike up to the viewpoint, swim in the turquoise pools, and perhaps try some of the extra activities available in the area.
Absolutely! In Q'eqchi', Semuc Champey means 'where the river hides beneath the stone.' It is a stunning natural monument formed by a natural limestone bridge over the Cahabón River, creating stepped turquoise pools. It is considered a sacred place of great natural importance and a unique ecosystem in the region.
The best time to visit is during the dry season, from November to May, when the water is clearer and the roads are easier to travel. As for the best time of day, I suggest going early in the morning, right when it opens, to enjoy more peace and fewer people at the pools and viewpoint.
Unfortunately, Semuc Champey presents significant challenges for people with reduced mobility. The trail to the viewpoint is uphill with uneven steps, and access to the pools also involves walking on natural and sometimes slippery terrain. There is no specific wheelchair-accessible infrastructure, so the visit may be very difficult.
Very close to Semuc Champey, you can explore the K'anba Caves, where you can swim or go tubing. You can also visit the town of Lanquín, which is picturesque and has its own cave, the Lanquín Cave. Both are excellent additions to your adventure in the area!
Of course! Bring comfortable, non-slip footwear for walking, a swimsuit and towel, sunscreen, and insect repellent. Do not forget a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. Most importantly, be respectful of the natural environment, do not leave trash behind, and follow local guidance. Get ready to disconnect and truly connect!
