Allow between 1 and 1.5 hours to explore the chapels, the sacred art museum, and the terraces with spectacular views of the other Meteora rocks at a relaxed pace. Include time for climbing up and down the stairs.
Founded in the 14th century, it was a male monastery until 1998, when it became a convent for nuns. It stands out for its Byzantine frescoes and for showing how monastic architecture was adapted to the natural rock formations.
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) offer mild temperatures and fewer tourists. If you visit in summer, go early (9:00 a.m.) to avoid crowds and intense heat, which can exceed 35°C.
It is not accessible: entry requires climbing 140 uneven steps carved into the rock, with no ramps or elevators. Visitors with mobility difficulties may prefer to admire it from the viewpoint at the base.
Less than 10 km away are the monasteries of Great Meteoron (the largest) and Varlaam. In Kalabaka, do not miss the Natural History Museum (with unique fossils) or the 6th-century Orthodox cathedral. More info: visitgreece.gr.
