No, admission is free. However, voluntary donations are accepted for the maintenance of the church. Some visitors leave between €1 and €3 as a symbolic contribution.
We recommend allowing 30 to 45 minutes to appreciate its Byzantine architecture, 12th-century frescoes, and spiritual atmosphere. This includes time for the walk up the cobbled lanes of the old town.
It is one of the oldest churches in Kalambaka, dating from the 10th century, with early Christian remains beneath the altar. Its Byzantine frescoes and cross-shaped dome show the artistic transition between the first and second Byzantine periods.
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) offer mild temperatures and fewer tourists. In summer, visit early, before 10:00 a.m., to avoid the heat and tour groups. Sunset offers magnificent views of Meteora from the area around the church.
It has limitations: access is via steep stone lanes and steps at the main entrance. There are no ramps. It is not recommended for wheelchairs, but people with moderate mobility limitations may be able to enter with assistance.
The Kalambaka Folklore Museum is a 10-minute walk away, and the Meteora Natural History Museum is 15 minutes away. The famous monasteries of Meteora are a 15-minute drive away. More info at: visitmeteora.travel
