¿Sabías que este rincón de Oia podría ser la clave del mito de la Atlántida perdida? Ven, te cuento los secretos que el mar Egeo guarda en sus paredes.
The Castle site (the Castle of Agios Nikolaos) consists of the ruins of an ancient fortification, so it is open **24 hours a day** and access is free. To get there, simply follow Oia’s main street (Nomikos) to the end of the cliff; you can find it more easily with this location map.
The visit is **completely free**; you do not need tickets or reservations to access the viewpoint area and the ruins. However, if you want to visit any adjacent private art galleries, they may have specific costs for their works, although entry just to look is usually free.
To explore the ruins and enjoy the panoramic views, **30 to 45 minutes** is enough. If you plan to stay for sunset, consider arriving at least two hours early to get a good spot, or better yet, use an audio guide while you walk to make the most of your time.
This site was one of the five fortified Venetian castles of Santorini, built in the 15th century to watch for pirates. It is a place with deep historical significance that partially survived the 1956 earthquake; a true gem of Aegean defensive architecture.
Although everyone goes at sunset, my expert advice is to go at **sunrise (between 7:00 and 8:00 AM)**. You will have perfect golden light for your photos, cooler weather, and you will be able to enjoy the landscape gallery without hundreds of tourists pushing around you.
I will be honest: Oia is not wheel-friendly. Access to the Castle involves uneven cobbled streets and **many steps**, so it is not accessible for wheelchairs and is very difficult with baby strollers; using a baby carrier is recommended.
You are in a key spot: just below you is Ammoudi Bay (you can walk down the steps), and a few minutes away on foot you will find the famous bookstore Atlantis Books, considered one of the most beautiful in the world.
Wear **comfortable, non-slip shoes**, as the marble and stone ground can be slippery. Also, bring a bottle of water and be prepared for the wind; at the tip of the castle the gusts can be strong, so secure your hat and glasses.
