¿Sabías que este castillo vio piratas turcos arrasar la isla y sobrevivió a un terremoto que lo dejó en ruinas? Escucha sus secretos mientras admiras el atardecer más famoso del mundo.
Oia Castle (also known as the ruins of Oia Castle or Oia Kastro) is open to the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, as it is an outdoor site. No reservation is required, and it can be easily reached on foot from anywhere in Oia. The best way is to walk through the village’s narrow streets to the western tip.
Good news! Visiting the ruins of Oia Castle is completely free. There is no entrance fee, so you can enjoy the stunning views at no extra cost. Take the opportunity to enjoy one of Santorini’s most famous views!
Generally, 30 to 60 minutes is enough to explore the castle ruins, take photos, and enjoy the views. However, if you want to stay for the famous sunset, we recommend arriving at least an hour before sunset to find a good spot.
The ruins of Oia Kastro were part of the Fortress of Agios Nikolaos, built in the 15th century by the Venetians to protect the island from pirates. Although only a few walls remain, it stands as a testament to Santorini’s rich defensive history and is now an iconic viewpoint for sunset views.
The best time to avoid the crowds is early in the morning, just after sunrise. However, for the famous sunset, we recommend arriving at least 1–2 hours in advance to get a good spot. The shoulder season (April–May and September–October) is ideal for enjoying good weather and fewer crowds.
Unfortunately, Oia Castle and much of Oia are not fully accessible for people with reduced mobility. The streets are steep, cobbled, and there are many stairs. Caution is recommended, and if possible, it is best to look for alternative ways to enjoy the views.
Near Oia Castle, you can explore Oia’s charming streets, visit the Oia Maritime Museum, browse art shops and boutiques, or enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants overlooking the caldera. You can also walk down to Ammoudi Bay for fresh seafood or take a boat trip.
Absolutely! Arrive well in advance (at least 1–2 hours before sunset) if you want a good spot. Wear comfortable shoes for the cobbled streets, and bring water and sun protection. Consider bringing a tripod for your sunset photos. If you want a quieter experience, visit in the morning. Don’t forget your camera!
