Donde los santos escondieron iconos bajo los saris y los ángeles llevan espejos de bolsillo
The churches have varying hours, but they generally open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM in high season. They are located in Kastoria's old town and are accessible on foot from the center. We recommend checking updated hours on the Kastoria tourism website or calling +30 24670 22290.
Most are free to enter, although some may request a small donation for maintenance. Private guided tours do have a cost. For exact prices, check with the local tourism office.
We recommend setting aside 2 to 3 hours to visit all 9 churches at a relaxed pace, as they are spread across the historic quarter. If you have limited time, prioritize Saint Stephen and Panagia Koumbelidiki (30 to 40 minutes).
They are a unique group of Byzantine churches (9th-14th centuries) recognized as European Heritage. They stand out for their Palaiologan frescoes and stone architecture, bearing witness to Kastoria's cultural splendor as a commercial center of the Empire.
Spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) offer mild temperatures and fewer tourists. Weekday mornings are ideal for avoiding crowds, especially in small churches such as Saint Nicholas Kasnitzi.
Some churches are difficult to access because of uneven steps and cobbled streets. The most accessible are Taxiarches and Saints Anargyroi in the lower area. Contact the tourism office for adapted routes.
Don't miss: 1) Lake Kastoria (boat ride), 2) the Byzantine Museum (official website), and 3) the Furriers' Quarter with traditional houses. All are less than 15 minutes away on foot.
1) Wear comfortable shoes for cobbled streets, 2) bring cash for donations, and 3) download our audio guide with self-guided routes and explanations of the most important frescoes.
